Illya is as energetic as he is enigmatic, tearing up mixes and destroying dancefloors with his unique and undeniable zeal behind the decks. Influenced by the likes of Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, The Lawnchair Generals and Inland Knights, Illya has built a solid reputation as one of Sydney’s leading DJs and is steadily becoming Australia’s not-so-secret weapon.
Having formed a passion for electronic music at raves and clubs years before throwing his first record on the decks, it wasn’t until about eight years ago after hearing and seeing DJs such as Mark Farina and Derrick Carter while working as a glassy at the ‘Underground Café’ that he was inspired to follow in their footsteps. For almost five years he played at Sydney clubbing institution ‘The Globe’ as a guest DJ at Switched On and resident at ONE. After three years he took over promotions with DJ Frenzie and started FLY, a successful Saturday night party which introduced Sydney to some of it’s favourite international names such as Kaskade, JT Donaldson, Jay-J, Chris Lum and Crazy Penis to name a few. Fast forward to 2005 and Illya is widely known for his ability to take on any DJ he may come up against as he draws his audience in with an extreme passion that truly captivates them.
Hence his unique sound is not just limited to the one style of music - he will cut up anything from house to breakbeat to hip-hop and smooth down-tempo beats. Although his passion lies with deep and dirty house music, his record collection and jaw-dropping techniques on the turntables prove he is more than worthy of being one of the Top 10 DJs in Australia. His versatility also makes him a great entertainment option for all manner of gigs and events. He holds a residency at Home, both in the main room as well as the exclusive VIP Terrace, is resident at After Ours at YU and Middlebar, while also regularly playing at Chinese Laundry and the seminal Sounds on Sunday at The Greenwood. Featuring on all local festival and main event line-ups, such as Parklife and the infamous Field Day, Illya - a dynamic and technically talented DJ - is clearly a firm favourite with promoters and the punters alike.
Not content with a busy DJ and touring schedule, Illya has teamed up with one of his back2back DJ partners and good friend, Toby Neal. Currently in the throes of establishing their own production label, both are working hard in the studio and it is anticipated that their follow up to ‘Pusstime’ will be felt around the dance floors imminently. Pusstime’s collaboration also extends to Julian Jason and is as featured on the Technics inthemix50 CD. Current airing, through House Arrest, has been made via Mark Farina’s official house night as part of the OM Records label.
Illya has played alongside international and interstate DJs and live acts including Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, East Coast Boogiemen, Dimitri From Paris, Roger Sanchez, Eric Morillo, Jay-J, Chris Lum, Jim Baron from Crazy Penis, JT Donaldson, Inland Knights, Jason Hodges, Dizzy, Johnny Fiasco, Miguel Migs, Soane, Halo & Hippe, Andy Caldwell, Midas, Darren Emerson, Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero, Sandy Rivera, Freestyle, Groove Armada, Roy Davis Jnr, Elliot Eastwick, Miles Holloway, Jose Nonez, Felix da House Cat Cut La Roc, DJ Regal, John Kelly, Resin Dogs, Ransom, Nubreed, Lee Rous, KLF, Snap, C&C Music factory and Jamiroquai.
